I forgot my administrator password. What can I do?

If you have lost administrative access to your Citadel installation (for example, if you forgot your administrator account password or inadvertently removed your administrator privileges), you can regain full control at any time by running the Citadel setup utility.

The setup utility allows you to designate any new or existing user account as the System Administrator. The next time that user logs in, Citadel automatically grants them administrator privileges.

Running Setup on an Easy Install System

If your server was installed using Easy Install, run the setup program directly on the host console as root:

/usr/local/citadel/setup

Running Setup on a Containerized System (Docker)

If you are running Citadel in a Docker container, execute the setup binary inside the running container:

docker exec -it citadel /usr/local/citadel/setup

Designating the Administrator Account

When the setup program reaches the administrator prompt:

<System Administrator>
Enter the name of the system administrator (which is probably you).
When an account is created with this name, it will automatically
be given administrator-level access.
  1. Enter the name of an existing user account whose password you know, or enter a new username you plan to create.
  2. Step through any remaining prompts by pressing Enter to preserve existing settings.
  3. Log in to Citadel using that username and its password. Administrative privileges will be granted immediately upon login.

Note: If your system is configured to use external LDAP authentication, specify the user's directory display name.
