Citadel with SpamAssassin and ClamAV

Any email server connected to the Internet will inevitably receive unwanted spam and malicious attachments. Citadel provides native, seamless integration with two standard open source protection engines: SpamAssassin for content-based spam filtering and ClamAV for antivirus scanning.

Overview and Prerequisites

Citadel connects directly to both services over standard TCP sockets:

• SpamAssassin: Citadel connects to the spamd daemon, which listens on TCP port 783 by default. SpamAssassin must be running in daemon/server mode.
• ClamAV: Citadel connects to the clamd daemon, which listens on TCP port 3310 by default. Ensure clamd.conf is configured with TCPSocket 3310 and TCPAddr 127.0.0.1.

If you run SpamAssassin or ClamAV on the same host as Citadel Server, their address is typically 127.0.0.1. You can also run them on dedicated external servers elsewhere on your network.

WebCit Configuration

To configure one or both services in WebCit:

1. Log in to WebCit as an administrator.
2. Navigate to System Configuration → General → Domain names and Internet configuration.
3. Enter the IP address or hostname of your SpamAssassin host in the SpamAssassin hosts field, and/or your ClamAV host in the ClamAV Antivirus hosts field.
4. Save your settings.

Once configured, Citadel automatically submits inbound messages to SpamAssassin for analysis and to ClamAV for virus scanning during SMTP reception, rejecting infected mail and handling spam according to your server policies.
